What You Need To Know About the New Express Scripts Prescription Drug Programs

Effective July 1, 2008, Express Scripts will implement three new programs for the Anthem Blue Cross PPO plans.

Step Therapy

Step Therapy is a program to promote the use of lower cost but equally effective generic drugs before you "step up" to higher cost brand name drugs.

Generics Preferred

Under the Generics Preferred program, prescriptions automatically will be filled with a chemically equivalent generic drug, if available and appropriate.

Exclusive Home Delivery

With Exclusive Home Delivery, members must obtain maintenance prescription drugs used to treat an ongoing medical condition through Express Scripts mail order service.

 Did You Know?

Expired over-the-counter medications and unused prescription drugs can make your medicine cabinet a dangerous place. Do an annual check:

  • Dispose of expired over-the-counter medicines and unused prescription pills
  • Make a list of medications you take. Include name and dosage, physician, date started, why and how the drug is taken, and any side effects
  • Discuss the list with your physician to ensure none of the medications may harm you if taken together
